Competitions for public buildings in areas like this are rare, so it is hard to resist the temptation. The National Gallery of Art is the main feature here, from both a cultural and an architectural point of view. Therefore, it is important that the Modern Art Centre projects its own face, but is not overwhelmed by the gallery. The remains of the garden of an old house inspired the idea to make it a homestead for modern art. The garden on the hill, cleared and ordered, was chosen as the main outdoor public space. It merges with the inside space, sheltered from the prevailing winds by the new building of the museum, and turned into a pleasant educational corner. The new building of artists’ studios is protected from the direct impact of the gallery. The 2-storey lower part fixes the perimeter of Upės St and the crossing with a planned street. 3 regular cubes on the slope and at the bottom of the building form the silhouette of a crumpled building.
