In 1957, a school building was built on Naugarduka Street according to a typical project. Symmetrical, not counting with a bright relief, so real Stalinist. After the educational institution was moved, it was sold at auction. The new owners, a real estate development company, planned to install apartments in this building. They also invited us to the competition. We thought for a long time - after all, designing apartments from a public building with wide corridors and spacious rooms is not a very inspiring task. The place is well known, a new public space has just opened nearby - Vingriau Square. And then the thought flashed - what if the building was cut through, connecting Aguonų, Naugarduks streets with Vingriau Square and then Vingriau Street with Reformati Park? And then we agreed to participate. By cutting a 7-meter-wide gorge in the center of the building, we killed at least a few rabbits with one shot - we integrated the building into the environment, created a convenient entrance, increased the area by adding terraced wings, retained and comfortably adapted the two existing staircases to a new function. And most importantly, we radically changed the Stalinist image of the building - instead of pompous and repulsive, it became pleasant and inviting. Such a proposal of ours surprised and intrigued the customers - ours and another project were selected for the second round. We adjusted the project a little based on the comments, but in the end we got the answer that it was not our project that was chosen. Although the real estate developers seem to have liked it, perhaps there was no strong support from the municipality or heritage protection institutions. The motives are various, but apparently the most important was fear - too bold a project.
