Many architects were invited to put forward their vision for the conversion of the former Skaiteks factory. We suggested integrating the tallest volume of the area into the surroundings, leaving its silhouette untouched, but breaking it in the middle, thus creating a cosy ‘canyon’. The part of the area by the river was divided into regular squares, featuring houses with gardens. After a workshop, we received a suggestion to prepare a project for the Skaiteks Quarter No 6. Two of the existing buildings were to be preserved: a massive former factory and a small wooden house, which soon burned down. Efforts are being made to identify the internal structure of the spaces connecting the upper and lower terraces, and to integrate the factory building. A new wooden house is proposed to replace the burnt one, but with a modern interpretation. The former factory building is softened by joining it with a new vertical volume, optically reducing its length and highlighting the entrance to the future business centre. On the top floor of the complex, a restaurant space with an outdoor terrace is planned, to reveal new views of the city. Along Paupio street, small 2 and 3-storey houses are envisaged, to match the present rather small-scale buildings of the street.
